What is your overall budget? And have you bought the other components yet or can we make suggestions on those as well?
Don't really have a budget per se, but my goal is to get a decent set up for as little as possible by utilizing eBay, craigslist, etc. I'm shooting for ~$3-400. I haven't purchased anything yet, but I've found both the amp and speakers for around $100 each. I've read glowing reviews about the amp, and I was mainly looking for speakers with = or > 90dB sensitivity since my set up won't be very powerful. Am I on the right track at all?
Please feel free to make recommendations on any of it, nothing is set in stone. I just want to listen to some records, and I'd like it to be a bit better than the all-in-one jobs they have at Target, et al. Also am I wrong in feeling that a nicer turntable would cause less wear on an album because they might be able to operate under less force at the stylus?
Please bear with me, I'm a total newb I know. Thanks again,
TAC
Hi there, TAC.
Thanks for joining the forum. It's exciting to hear that you're getting interested in hi-fi.
Do you have a preamp with a phono section?
The Sonic Impact Super-T is an impressive amp for the money. Wes Phillips had a lot of fun with it. But, I believe the Super-T only has one input. If you're interested in using more than one source (CD player, tuner, computer, turntable), you're going to need a preamplifier. And, if you're mostly interested in vinyl (awesome!), you're going to want that preamp to have a phono section.
I don't have a pre-amp. Hmmm...I'm really new at this, please forgive my gross ignorance. I'm learning a lot!
Could the set-up I described above, w/o a preamp work if I only use the Super-T in conjunction w/ the turntable? I didn't really have plans for using it for anything else. I really only listen to CD's in the car, at home most of my music is either iPod or iTunes based just listening over my computer.
Any comments from anyone on the SL-1300. Am I totally off base in thinking it should be able to use cartridges/styli and other replacement parts compatible with the more common SL-1200?
No need to apologize. It's great that you're interested, and we all have lots to learn.
Only if the Super-T has a phono section, and I don't think it does. Would someone please correct me if I'm wrong?
You're correct, Stephen; The Super-T does not have a phono section.
Our friend could, though, buy an affordable phono preamp and put it between the turntable and the Super-T, which is so purist I'm jealous.
Here are a couple of suggestions for the phono preamp:
NAD PP-2
Pro-Ject Phono Box
Vinyl lives!
premium phono preamps are FREE. Why buy one?
Find repair shops with older integrateds, recievers, preamps, etc. take the premium older HK, pioneer, technics, Rotel, Yamaha, etc.. integrated, with the blown power amp, but it still turns on. Custom cartridge loading, etc. Run the tape outputs into the t-amp. DONE.
It's a bit more work, but it is free. And it is better sounding than most you'll ever buy, at less than a few hundred $.
