The Korg MR1000 puts 5.6MHz DSD in our hands. It IS really good.

DSD cannot be directly edited on any workstation. Thus, DSD needs to be transcoded into PCM for editing.

DXD is simply 32 bit (floating point)/352.8kHz PCM for recording and editing for final release on SACD. Pyramix workstations use this format for these purposes and can transcode DSD into this PCM format.

Pyramix is a Digital Audio Workstation made by Merging Technologies. It runs on XP based PC's.

We have already gone through this.

Why is Pryramix being touted as the only DSD editing software then? Korg supplies some software with it's unit, any good? Can the Korg work as a DAC with an input from a CD play. I don't quite see that in it's specs, or can't get it from their info I read. Will it upsample Cd out from a cd palyer into 2X DSD? that would be interesting

If the Korg can be run as a DAC, will it obsolete the EMMLABS CDSA player? At 10X the price?

I don't think anyone claims this. Merging Technology's Pyramix workstations is one of the big boys however, along with SADiE.

From a slightly earlier thread (I quote myself):

"DXD is how Pyramix workstations internally process DSD source files. DXD is what Merging Technologies and Sony/Phillips call 24bit/325.8kHz PCM. (Pyramix is a line of DSD workstation made by Merging Technologies.)

To mix and edit DSD, the Pyramix transcodes the DSD source file to 24bit/325.8kHz PCM for all editing. It transcodes it again back to DSD for output. That is, *all* DSD audio on a Pyramix goes through this conversion via internal PCM and sigma/delta converters.

SADiE (Sonoma) workstations do not convert the DSD source except at the edit crossfade point. During the length of the crossfade the DSD source is transcoded to 8bit/2.8Mhz PCM and back to DSD."

Finally, upconverting and transcoding 44.1 CD PCM to DSD will not make it sound any better. As long as the math is correct, it will sound the same.

If i get's this correctly now. so if the EMMLABS is up sampling DSD to 2X and it improves th sound, but if I take and CONVERT CD PCM into DSD 2X on the Korg, will it do that? It won't make any difference? When my Philips SA 963 upsamples just CD it doesn't saound any different than at standard playback. BUT why do the CD layer on teh Hybrid SACD disc sound so so so so much better on any CD only player I use, what is that recording made of then, is it CD PCM converted to DSD and back to PCM so a standard CD player can use it, it has to be right? But it it was re done in DSD back to PCM CD, what did it change? the Cd hybrid layer of any SACD/Hybrid has always sounded much much better than teh CD version only on teh same players, what's going on wit dat? so if i use teh Korg, is it gonna change something, anyone do this yet? What does the EMMLABS CDSA player do with teh CD layer on a CD only disc, does it re do it, or just plays back as regular CD? If teh KORG is alwso upsampling teh DSD signal, to teh same thing as teh EMMLABS is on playback, it must be using teh same chips, ckts? EMMLABS says on their site they have a propritory chip, to 2X DSD, did they license it to KORG, this KORG and EMMLABS seems like a good candidate for a review in the magazine, it would be great if a $1200 unit smokes everything else, reality based products, providing the poor with superb sound. But then where do the $27K CD only players go, into the recylce cans!!!! JA, what's up? Let's see some EMMLABS and KORG MR-1000 reviews, then throw in soem AVA Ultra Hybrid stuff, it really is time to get some high quality, mortal priced stuff in teh pages, $27K $100K TT's are a real waste of important mag space....Maybe

<sigh>

<forehead settles into keyboard>

Transcoding and upsampling data does not add any information to the original file; it simply presents the same data in a different way.

Put another way: bigger numbers from small numbers does not equal bigger sound, only bigger data files.

An SACD sounds better only when there is more information. There are hybrid SACD's where the SACD layer does not sound any better than the CD layer because the SACD layer has the same info as the CD layer.

Digital isn't magic nor is DSD. It's just a different way to get analog sound out of your speakers.

Isn't there anything claimed by a digital manufacturer that a DUP won't believe?
