Maybe a Krell, Musical Fidelity or Plinius. If you don't like them with Simaudio and you don't like them with Krell, then they probably just aren't your cup of tea.

They satisfy really well about 75-80% of my listening so I want to try a different power source. Thanks for the advise.

I have an opportunity to purchase a pair of used Cremona "full range" speakers for a reasonable price. They sound great with jazz, classic, chamber, solo and voice, which I love. But they sound too "sterile" with rock and roll - they don't swing and the bass doesn't slam. I auditioned them through a Simaudio Moon i5.3. Before I plop down a large sum, I would like to audition these through another amp. Any recommendations for a better amp for these speakers?

Why not go straight to Sonus faber's own integrated Musica amp...? It works fine with Cremona and Amati Homage.

Now cut that out - those are the Amati and if I see/hear them I'll want them, and my wife will kill me.

Seriously though, how do the Cremonas perform with tube vs solid state? I'll have to find a way to audition them with different amps, but they're at a private residence and i have to reduce my choices to 1 or 2 amps besides the one currently connected.

I don't think that changing amps is going to help you. The Cremonas and even Amatis are great for vocals and jazz, but they don't have the testes to generate enough low and articulate bass for rock. You may need to graduate to Elipsa in order to get the kind of bass articulation that you're looking for.

Elipsa being new = about 3 times what I would spend on these Cremonas. What about adding a subwoofer such as the Velodyne DD12 or DD15? There are some pretty good used one available for not too much.

Thanks

I am not a big fan of subwoofer/satellite setup. I've never heard one that integrated seamlessly. I'm very sensitive to that discontinuity and I tend to stay away from that. Others will disagree and offer their opinions, but personally, I'm not a big fan of a subwoofer option. I like full range speakers that deliver full range with seamless driver integration and flow.

Thanks AlexO. I think unless i hear differently about integrating a sub into an audio only system I'll scuttle the Cremona auditions and look elsewhere. They sound beautiful for music other than rock and roll, the looks are exquisite, and the price is right. Merd.

Has anyone a different experience with a sub and full range speakers?

While it takes some effort, a sub can be well integrated into a full range system. Setting up a sub is like setting up speakers; it takes thought and patience.

We have all heard bad sub implementations. With the good ones you don't realize a sub is there.

I've auditioned the Cremona speakers and i have to nix them due to poor rock performance. I've also auditioned Totem Forest and a Swiss manufacturer. All of these speakers handle jazz and classical well, and have a good soundstage. But none handle rock in a pleasing way.

My budget is about 4-6,000, any recommendations for a good all-around speaker? My current speakers are celestion Ditton 44, about 25 years old and are pretty well toasted.
