Can I ask why you think a table that "sounds good" in stereo at 33 R.P.M. playing a stereo disc wouldn't sound good for your needs? I'm very unclear why you would think the turntable would affect mono playback.
They both use the same cartridge and the differences in plinth, tonearm, motor assembly and belt are little, so I would think it is difficult to distiguish which sounds better. However, there is a difference in price that one could use to upgrade the Project by replacing the stylus with a Ortofon OM10.
There are some dedicated mono cartridges out there if you're really into it.
I think mono records sound better through one speaker rather than two.

Now my question is about the 45s. Are you talking about 12" high fidelity or old 45 singles? In case you're talking about 12" high fidelity, then I don't think you'll need a dedicated mono cartridge. With the arm on either turntable that you mention, you'll not be able to change the cartridge back and forth quickly. For 12" 45/monos, that won't be a problem. Just use your stereo cartridge.
With any luck, your phono pre-amp will have a "mono" switch. I often use my mono switch to defeat illconceived early stereo with the piano hard right and the drums hard left and the bass floating in space. For mono vinyl played with a stereo cartridge, you'll have double-mono.
I've got little experience with those 45-singles. If that's what you're talking about, then there might be better turntable choice. Rough condition, old 45s may sound better with a mono-only cartridge, but then you'll then need another source for stereo 33 1/3 and stereo 45s.

I think my first post is having some mistakes (Sorry, my English is not good) . I need to change turntable because the old one, only have 1 speed, 33rpm, and the tonearm will just go to the start position of a 12-inch disk. It can't play 7-inch disks.
THe 45rpm that I mentioned are 7-inch, mainly soundtracks from films, popular songs in 1950-1960s. While two of them are Toscanini's La Mer and The Skater's Waltz. These two disk set is recorded in EP format.
Arh, yes, I also need a pre-amp. Which band is making mono/stereo pre-amp like Dave posted? And I would like to know some comment on Rega P-1.

Kevin, I've got a vintage Bryston 1B that has two phono inputs and a mono/stereo switch. These are still traded on places like Ebay for $400-$700. If you have room, you could keep your old turntable for stereo 33 1/3 and use the new for your 7" monos.
Another option to consider is a vintage TT with a removeable headshell. If you could get two headshells, then you could mount a mono cartridge in one and a stereo cartridge in the other. If I remember correctly, I think the old AR turnables have a interchangeable head shell. Some of the old Thorens may also. Sorry, but I can't name a specific model to look for, but maybe someone else here can get specific.
