Sounds like maybe something happened to one of your NAD components, perhaps the CD player that the speaker fell on?

I agree. I think it's more likely that the speaker won the battle with the CD player.

Have you tried other sources and noticed the same hiss?

Thanks for your prompt advice! I was spending ages listening to many cd's last night, and noticed that this is just apparent with a few discs.....maybe it is just some recordings and I was being paranoid. The CD player did take quite a knock so maybe it is possible it was affected.

In such a situation, is it possible that only some sounds/frequencies would show the issue?

Anyway, will try plugging in dvd player with same cd that I noticed this with tonight......sure this will hopefully settle the issue. Is it normal that some recordings will show a hiss (with your ear close to the tweater)?

Thanks once again

Yes, that's very possible. Sometimes, tape hiss and other noise are just artifacts of the recording process and will be present on any system. James Taylor's "Sweet Baby James" has a lot of hiss, for instance. It's much more pronounced than in your scenario, though; It can be heard from the listening position at normal volumes.

It might be a problem with your CD player, or it could be that you're noticing the sound now because your post-fall examination is so stringent. I'm not sure. But, yes, some recordings were originally cut with some unwanted noise. Usually, only audio guys like us notice it, or care when we do.

As I sit here at my desk, my printer - which is off - is emitting a high frequency tone that is just maddening. It must be the electrical current, or something. My cell phone does the same thing when it's charging.

Thanks again for your reply. I have done an A/B test with my Pioneer DVD player playing the same cd, and exactly the same noise is present. Once again only in some recordings.

I think I am being far too strict, as I need my ear right beside the tweeter to really hear it!

Just wanted to be 100% sure that equipment has not been damaged after the incident. Have been playing guitar for 16 years, and always loved music.......now addicted to this new hobby and have been purchasing and listening to so much new and enjoyable music on my new baby..........was scared she would be out of action!!!!

I will leave it at this, as I presume I am just being too careful.

Thanks once again for all your advice, and happy listening

Sounds like problem solved!

I agree that if this "noise" is apparent on some discs, but not others, then it's likely the recordings.

Which recordings have you played and noticed the extra noise? Perhaps we can correlate our experiences to yours.

Also, in my experience, it has been exceedingly rare to see one speaker get damaged and then have its partner instantaneously develop the same flaw. That would require some hefty amount of speaker empathy - "simultaneous sympathetic speaker dysfunction syndrome!"

I look forward to your list - I bet we'll all agree with your findings!

Cheers.

(Edited for spelling.)

Hi,

Yeah, thought it was strange that two speakers were taken out.....then again it was a big party!

Have just confirmed that 100% is no issue. Listened to same track (Board of Canada: Music has the right to children, track 4) on my PC. Junk speakers etc, however it is very clear that the same treble hiss is present

With a lot of Rock recordings, Megadeth etc it is not noticable. Same with Diana Krall, Nat King Tribute Disc. It is noticable also on Fugees: The Score. Again, just the CD, and only when ear is placed up against the tweeter.

Now I am satisfied all is good, I can finally get back to listening to my collection on my chair

Other than that, I must say I am extremely happy with my purchase. I listened to many different setups, including ones 3 times the price, as my budget allowed. I just couldn't yet justify the extra at the moment. Have bought some Chord Bi-Wire cable, which seemed to make a significant difference to the free cable recieved with my purchase. Spending the money saved on increasing my music library.

In fact, a friend with a significantly more expensive setup with mono-blocs etc was amazed with the sound for the price, and is now considering changing his setup!
