Is it a metal dome? If so, yep, it needs to be replaced.
Yes, the cone is metal. I've tried comparing the speakers against each other but I honestly can't tell the difference. If I am able to pull the dent out, and assuming the tweeter behind it isn't damaged, it seems like it wouldn't need to be replaced.
Do any speaker gurus know if the cone is mostly cosmetic, or how much it actually affects the sound?
The metal dome is the tweeter. There is no "tweeter" behind the metal dome. A dent in the dome will affect dispersion and to some extent distortion and resonance. None of which are dramatic in the effects in this case. You can certainly listen to the dented dome and, if you hear no difference, not worry about the problem. If the seller agrees to pay for the replacement, however, I would get the repair done.
