Yeah, I was beginning to think I'd have to remove my frozen photo of you and Big Mike from my freezer to get you to come back and beg me to put it back in, since it's clearly got your system sounding so awesome that you're spending all your time checking out Spoon discs and ignoring the forum. Welcome back!

Hola!

After I posted, I had to go out of town, now I get one night at home and then it's out and about for another week.

(I popped back in because I heard a rumor that during the month of August, we could post about music without getting spammed about Matt Oreo.)

By the way, the new John Doe, "A Year in the Wilderness," is almost as good as "Forever Hasn't Happened Yet!"

It takes about five trips through, and then it is "heavy rotation" worthy.

X/John Doe need to be in the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame.

So do, as I've already opined, Los Lobos, Little Feat, and too many more.

I got an iPod for Christmas, 2005, that I'm thinking of learning how to hook up.

Going to Reno August 16 for a Bruce Cockburn concert in a small outdoor amphitheater, if anyone is gonna be near there.

Also still trying to "invent" two tweaks I thought I'd have invented by last January.

Jeff, my system is sounding good. Keep me in your freezer. I still want to get my golf book autographed, so come out for CES in January!

New interest...garage sale Hi Fi...I'll post a pic. (I still need to hang that picture sitting on the receiver, but...you know.)

The pic kind of shortens the foreground. The inner 2+2 is just over two and one half feet from the wall, and I have them kind of slant outward as they move laterally. They image best for Katy's side of the bed, but I haven't got them dialed in for best sound yet. Then I'll spike them to the floor.

The Sony PS1 is pretty fun. I'd call it a bit "clinical," but Neil Young Live at Massey Hall sounds "pristine" in a good way. Morphine's "The Night" is a little ill defined in the 70-90Hz region, so I'll be bringing them out a little farther into the room when Katy's not looking.

They couple with the room like a mofo - very good sensation of speed and immediacy.

Total system cost was 200 for the receiver, 200 for one of the 2+2 pairs, I forget the cost of the other pair of 2+2's, and 15 bucks for the PS1. I brought the Hafler up in case the receiver couldn't handle two pairs of speakers, but it does OK, so the Hafler is there only as a room treatment right now. Big Mike gave me the speaker wires, and I already had an old pair of interconnects, so total system cost is around 600 bucks.

Then, just as I ran into a bear of a budget snafu, a family friend brought over his ADD spawn and one of his kids went to the basement, directly to the turntable, and "killed" my Lyra Argo. The cantilever is gone gone gone.

No budget to replace it, so it's been no analog lately. Crap and crap.

OK, enough about non-music related stuff.

I'll try to think of what else has sounded good lately.

See y'all next week.

That looks like an old Techniques receiver. I still have a little 25 watter in my garage system.

Back in the day when everyone was fighting over Pioneer vs Sansui vs Marantz, I was partial to Techniques and thought they were all deaf. Heh.

Buddha - I bought the Spoon album based on your recommendation and am listening to it whilst working, and am digging it (at the penultimate tune on the first disc right now). The way the bonus disc is packaged is idiotic, though--you nearly break the tray trying to pull the disc out from behind it.

So, Transference is out now.

I like it because it's Spoon, but not sure if it measures up to "Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga" or "Gimme Friction" yet.

This new one is almost Strokes-like on cuts two and three.

This one also gets better with repeat listening.

This is the first Spoon album I've liked since A Series of Sneaks, it's more like older stuff with less piano and more distorted guitar.

After more time with it, it measures up fine.

I like the way they work percussion into their mix, in general.

I especially like the drive and bass pace on "Got Nuffin."

All in all, a solid thumbs up!
