Do you ever listen to music, or is this for a purely HT (home theater) application?
Either way, I would recommend you get the best front left and right speakers you can afford for now, then later add some smaller surrounds of the the same brand/series.
The majority of sound, and the most important sounds, nearly always come from these speakers, therefore, I suggest you spend the majority of your budget were it will do the most good.
I'm sure others will chime in with suggestions on what brands are their favorites in your budget range.
yea, it will probably be half and half. I'll watch movies and play games, but I'll also listen to music quite a bit too. Thanks for the input
I'd look at the Infinity Primus speakers, possibly the P162 for around $200 a pair. You could add more P162s in the future, and the PC250 center channel for $140 and the PS12 subwoofer for $275. If you could swing it the P362 at about $310 a pair would be an excellent start, here is a review of its predecessor - http://www.stereophile.com/floorloudspeakers/605infinity/

Here is a review of the P162's little brother - http://stereophile.com/loudspeakerreviews/404infinity/
How do those P162s compare to the Bose 201. I was looking around on crutchfield and saw that the two where about the same price, and I've always thought that bose was the best in sound quality, but that could just be nonsense rolling through my head because of their commercials and hype.
and does it matter with the ohm impedance and power since they are connecting to the computer and not a receiver thing.
I can't take the Bose 201s seriously, they just aren't up to it when compared to the Infinity Primus. In addition, aren't you going to need some kind of amplification to drive loudspeakers using your computer? The computer it would seem to me is a source having analog outputs with line level like power and impedence. I think you will also be in the market for a multichannel amplifier. The Outlaw 7075 comes to mind for $700. Or if you are handy the Audio Digit Class T 8x100 kit for about $400 would be a great fit.
That is what I was thinking, he is a good candidate for using class 't' amplification. Or a used adcom or rotel multi-ch from audiongon.
Yea, I thought I'd need something like a receiver or amp, but I wasn't sure. But would it be okay if I waited. Because I'm dropping 1500 into my computer + the cost of speakers, so I'm kinda short on spare money. So should I wait till I have enough to get both the amp and the loud speakers or can I get the speakers and then save up for the amp, then get the rest of the speakers after that.
Thanks again for all the help, I'm starting to understand a lot more now, keep the good advice comin'
You could start with the computer and the speakers but you won't get any sound out of the speakers until you get amplification. The more I think of it the Audio Digit 8 channel T-amp would be about ideal. Probably about $500 by the time you put the transformer and enclosure into it. But the sound is really good from them. Here is a review of the 4 channel brethren: http://www.tnt-audio.com/ampli/autocostruire_mc4x100_e.html
Check out JBL's 830 L monitors. You can get them for a little over $500 on Amazon. They have nice tweeters, are efficient (90 db), and go down to around 48 hz.
If you want to spend a little more (say, $1,000) check out Totem's Rainmaker. They are not very efficient, but produce a wonderful sound if driven with the proper amp.
so do you mean I won't get any sound what so ever, or do you mean they won't be loud or the quality will be much lower?
and I've pretty much decided on what I would like my full setup to be; Front left and right: Primus P252, Back surround left and right: Primus P162, and for the center channel: Primus PC250.
I was looking into it, and I saw some Polk audio that looked nice, how is their quality.
I mean no sound. What brand and model of motherboard are you planning on for your computer? What audio component does it employ?
here's the link to the motherboard: here
it uses a Realtek ALC889a High-Definition audio codec supporting 7.1 channel surround sound up to 32-bit/192KHz, but I do see what you mean. I tried hooking up my speakers that I have now to my family computer and it didn't work out so well. Just a little feed back buzz and crackle, then no sound at all. So, I'm assuming the audio setup that my mobo will have will do the same :/ so that means I'll have to get an amp right off before I get the speakers. Do you guys know of any good places to buy amps like the one you had mentioned. I plan on buying the speakers from cructchfield cause they are genereally cheaper and they have free shipping, but as far as the amp, i didn't see it on there. So I was wondering where a good place would be to get a price on the amp would be. Thanks for all the help so far *thumbs up* i'm starting to understand more, but is there any good informational sites that I could go to to learn about the amps and how to set them up, and speakers, etc. Thanks again.
look at reviews of multichannel logitechs
find something for $200 from dell for example
the xbox spherex speakers were amazing at crapusa for $150
the are Mirage orbs
but they are all gone now
spend less on your computer unless you are putting in a blu-ray recorder or something
anand guide to midrange computer
yea, i was think of maybe just getting a longitec thing, but I might get an amp, because I have 6 speakers now, not the best quality, but they are speakers, so I figure I can get the amp now and the upgrade my speakers later.
and as far as the computer, I do plan on getting blue ray in the future, and I spent about 3 or 4 months researching and norrowing down the parts to exactly what I wanted and needed for what I plan on using it for.
looked at mobo
6 x audio jacks (Center/Subwoofer Speaker Out/Rear Speaker Out/Side Speaker Out/Line In/Line Out/Microphone)

If you want good sound, younot only need good speakers but also a good amp.
