It has got a set of Left and Right RCA outputs on the back I/O that I assume are the correct ones for providing a signal to an additional amp.

What are they labelled? Pre out or tape out?

One set labeled DAT/tape, and another labeled VCR (It is an A/V reciever). I'm guessing that I need a pre-out, not either of these.

Also, someone is selling "JVC 5341" 4 ways on my local Craigslist for $30. I emailed him and he said he does not have a stereo to test them out on, would it be rude for me to bring my own? ha.

Anyways, I think I'm going to see how my Fisher speakers sound on that amp, is there any danger of me damaging them because the amp is probably putting out 150w per channel compared to the speakers rated 75w? (My google-fu is stong and I was able to find the factory specs)...

Thanks-

You need a pre out. You can damage the speakers with your amp but only by being foolish.

So, what about those JVCs? Also, is there any danger keeping it near my precious hard disks?

(unapologetic bump)

So, as I understand it, pre-outs are not amplified yet output is controlled by the volume knob, whereas tape-out/record-out is just the raw unamplified output from the receiver. Correct?

Also, does anyone know what those two extra components (on top of the rack in my photo there) do?

Pre amplifier outputs are taken after the volume control and represent the signal being fed to the power amplifier - unless a signal processing unit such as an EQ is inserted between the two components.

Tape out is a (typically) buffered output that represents the raw signal from a selected source, CD, phono, tuner, etc. It can also be used as a signal processing loop for items such as EQ, DBX, etc. The tape output is taken before the volume control and is unaffected by the level at which you listen.

Additionally, the output impedance of pre out and tape out are very likely different as they are intended to see different loads downstream.

It's your call on the JVC speakers.

If I remember correctly, the DBX is meant to extend the low frequency response of your speakers. It is rather ineffective if the speakers do not have reasonably deep extension in the first place and it's overuse can tax the system for no really good reason. Since its effective range is in the deepest bass regions, it is quite often very dificult to actually hear what the DBX is adding. You will not likely hear an improvement when using this with the Bose or JVC's, etc. This piece is probably listed in the DBX pages.

The other piece is probably meant to add dimensionality to the sound much as Dolby Pro Logic achieves. The unit you have might be meant for two or four speakers as this was the way to manage ambience retrieval until Dolby Pro Logic entered the consumer market.

I think the your best bet is to forget about the subharmonic synth and Spacial System, they're just going to add unnecessary stops on your signal path (bad news bears). Run the bose bookshelves off of the Denon, run the record outs into the GAS "Thalia" preamp, to the Acurus "A150" amplifier to run your fisher speakers that way you have control over volume in both places. Of course before you do all this clean the pots on your preamp. If I were you (which in not) I would avoid those JVC speakers and save your money for a... more modern upgrade. Hope this helps, feel free to message me if you have any more questions.

Thank you Jan and mchale, I ended up running the Fishers off of the GAS/Acurus using the front speaker output from my computer, and the Bose off of the Denon using the rear speaker outputs, sounds great (Or would rather, If I had someplace sensible to put them :/)

The other two components I just left out in the end, I didn't like the effect they had on everything at higher volumes (which is where I usually listen at).

Thank you for all your help, I'll probably be deleting my photos to save bandwidth

As far as new speakers go, I'm working on getting an old marantz model 9 tube amp and some klipsch cornwalls to play my vinyl

(edit: hah, we must be on the same wavelength mchale, I set it up exactly like that without seeing your post)

Good work You might consider using the Marantz & Klipsch combo as your main system.
