The AV receiver should have an input for the CD Player, that that would require a pair of interconnects (analog). I would avoid using the digital route, the sound might be bright and slightly compressed. I would highly suggest changing routes if you still can; and go with a high current entry level intergrated amp and a single disc player of equal price. The suggested route is going to smoke the AV receiver in clarity, detail, dynamics. The source always is important; crap in - crap out. The M50 has pretty good bass responce unless your looking to shake the house, is a dual purpose system in the future plans; stereo and home theater? - Z
Okay, can you please explain to me the difference between an amp and a receiver? Googled it and don't understand a darn thing. Say I did keep the receiver I have, would a different CD changer even matter? Also, are there any halfway reasonably priced integrated amps and changers (assuming I can ever understand exactly the difference between an amp and my receiver--Kenwood VR-750?). Thanks for your help. I don't mean to seem so stupid--my old system sounded so great and I bought it when I was 21--am now 48! So now, I am having to relearn all of this stuff.
Simplistically, the difference between an integrated amplifier and a receiver is that a receiver comes equipped with a built-in tuner, while an amplifier does not. Of course, in this home theater-centric world in which we live, "receiver" has come to mean a great deal of other things. The key thing to understand is that receivers have features; Amplifiers strive for ultimate sound.
Will your receiver allow you to notice a difference in source? The short answer is "yes". Inevitably, though, a superior amplifier will bring out more of the best in any new source you purchase.
Ok, here is some entry level gear to consider and demo.
Integrated amps - Cambridge Audio 340 A or NAD C 325BEE
CD Players - Cambridge Audio 340 C , NAD 525BEE or Marantz CD-5001
CD Changers - Marantz CC-4001
Something else to consider would be the Arcam Solo or the Music Hall Trio these are an integrated CD player, tuner & amplifier in one package. The Arcam Solo has had a lot of positive praise. The Music Hall is brand new; I have Music Hall gear and love it. -Z
