Well, there's a man with whom I'll never do business.

And I thought this was going to be a post about REO Speedwagon's, 157 Riverside Avenue.

So which one do you beleive? Do you think MF has some kind of superior ears, maybe he does, he does hear demagnetized plastic, and CD's!!!! Why would this guy at Better Records make such claims about how bad the stuff sounds that MF thinks sounds good?

Looking at Mr. Fremer's list, it doesn't appear that his sole criteria is sound. He appears to be offering a list of good music, well-presented, that he feels is well worth listening to. I doubt he would argue that records exist that sound better than some that are on his list.

It's not that I believe Michael Fremer to be infallible, it's that I don't appreciate this individual being so ruthlessly critical and disrespectful. Besides, he's not God, either. Does he think that by refuting Fremer's choices and offering his own that he is creating The One True List? I'm just saying that he's a hypocrite and I don't do business with people who are that full of themselves.

Perhaps, Carl, it's because, like you he has special powers that help him identify everything good and a willingness to call anyone who disagrees with him a fool.

Have you gone to musicangle and checked out the list, Erik? I'm a little short in the rock and pop category, and Mike has a lot more Miles in his collection than I have, but his recommendations in jazz and classical hit lots of my favorites from my own collection. He may not be infallible, but his tastes are pretty similar to mine - perhaps because I'm fallible too, eh?

I'll do that, Clay. Thanks. I find myself leaning much more towards jazz, and I've been accumulating J.J. Johnson CDs (yeah, I know, but I haven't gotten a turntable yet) at an alarming rate. Trombone is my favorite instrument by a country mile because I grew up with my father playing tenor and my mom bass. I recently discovered Josh Brown (plays in Michael Buble's band), who is frighteningly good. I hope his CD does justice to his mastery of the art.
I also just picked up Miles Davis All Stars (featuring Johnson) on XRCD because I want to try out the format. I don't think they'll become a staple, though, because 30 bucks a pop doesn't fly. I'll take vinyl for $5-10.

He also critizied Whispers, telling me they had a "design defect" he would tell me thefix for a fee!! And he uses them himself...so he might know something, he uses stuff and finds faults, and let's ya know. He just might know, why does MF know anything anyway? Creative writing course? But then the other guy is trying to sell LP's for $400 each calling them hot stamerps....everyone has their own thang don't they?

The gentlemen at my dealer are very down-to-earth and genuinely helpful. I've walked out of other dealers that did not provide a satisfying experience. There are good, honest people in audio; you just have to know where to look.

A lot of them in fact. I've got some great dealers in my area and also have had great experiences when I am out of town and just stop in to visit a local dealer.

While picking through the used vinyl, Erik, be on the lookout for Trummy Young and Vic Dickenson - two great old jazz trombonists - and, of course there's always Teagarten.

A lot of them in fact.

This is very true, and one of the reasons why I love this hobby.
