If his budget is limited I can't think of a better choice for a stereo receiver than the Harman Kardon HK3480. You'ld have to spend at least three times as much to get something that is discernably better (Outlaw RR2150, for example).

You could also check out the Sherwood Newcastle RX-770 stereo receiver for about the same price. Pretty good for a budget receiver.

That's what I figured. I use to own H/K Citation components in the late 70's, and they were very impressive sounding. I know their now made in China, but I understand they still design them here. That kind of scares me because I went through hell with a V.A.L tube amp made in China. I finally got my money back, and bought a great tube headphone amp from Jack Woo of WooAudio in New York. Their beautifully hand wired in New York. Fantastic sound with my AKG K701's!

Well, My brother ordered the H/K 3480 receiver for $218.00 new from Amazon.com. Seems to be a pretty good deal. Should be here in about 3 more days.

His speakers are Polk Monitor 70's, and he has a Musichall mmf5 turntable, and a H/K CDR-26 CD burner player. I think he is using a Shure v15 type 3 with new tips he bought from Shure about 2 years ago for $62.50 each when they were dumping them. He and I bought 3 apiece. at one point he was talking about changing cartridges though.

Within the last year I've installed a HK3380 and I just love it. BTW, Stereophile has given an honorable mention in the past for the 100W version. Also, the unit I got was factory direct remanufactured. I wasn't disappointed with what I received. Also, this company still believes in great customer service. If you don't like it send it back for a different unit. No problem. Shipping is prepaid.
