Describe how the outputs on your laptop are labelled and how the inputs on your sound system are labelled. Do either have digital connections?

Kal might also need to know what model laptop you have. It sounds like you are using the stereo mini jack for audio out.

Are you using a laptop card like this Audigy 2Z5 ?

Your manual says the audio out jack also doubles as a 3.5mm mini s/pdif digital output jack.

As I see it the your laptop only outputs analogue stereo out the mini jack you are using. Your speaker system is accepting that and send the lower freqs to the sub, but it is still stereo.

You audio jack that serves double duty as the s/pdif digital signal could be sent to a HT receiver/decoder that would give you the 5.1 out you are looking for...maybe. It could just be stereo out s/pdif digital.

You manual does not indicate that it is outputing home theater surround sound(Dolby Digital or DTS) with its stock output jacks.

You may have to go to the Audigy card I linked you to the last time if you want HT. A laptop may not be the computer to use if you want to stream HT sound. There are other Soundblaster cards for desktop computers that do have dedicated analog output jacks for L/R front and rear, center channel and sub out.

I think what he has is a right, left and sub woofer in. He only has a stereo out, no sub or mono.
