I forgot.
The Fillmore disc seems to have some wow and flutter issues that mostly turn up in the sustained cymbals notes.
Almost like going in and of of phase, or is it speed?
Anyway, the cymbals have a "coming and going" kind of feeling, maybe like being at an outdoor show on a windy day.
It may not be noted on the jacket, but they may have used somthing like the Aphex Aural Exciter which I thought detracted from the sound. Kind of like the old cheap, spring reverbs that always seem to be overdone...to me anyway.
Buddha! Spot on with your description of Neil's Massey Hall CD. My initial reaction was that the recording is better than it should be! Kinda like the discovery that many Jazz recordings from the 50's and 60's are terrific. For fun, I want to do a side by side comparison of "Old Man" from that recording to his recent Heart of Gold recording. I think his passion for his art is as strong as ever.
Buddha,
The "deluxe" edition of the Massey Hall release includes a DVD which contains the entire performance presented with 24 bit/96Kz PCM stereo audio. Worth checking out.
I'll try to do an a/b comparison of the two (CD versus DVD) using my MacCormack UDP-1 universal player and post my impressions.
