posaune,

As an adopted Swede I can't pass up an opportunity to put in a little plug for our proudest export, IKEA.

I have my entire library stored in IKEA Billy bookshelves with CD inserts. I cannot claim that this is necessarily the most functional or the most aesthetic solution but it is robust as hell and excellent bang-for-the-buck.

The 80cm shelves ($50) with six CD inserts ($15 each) take at least 816 single discs (you can actually jam an extra disc into each 'pocket' making it 864 but then they are pretty hard to extract ) for a grand total of 17

Thanks for the idea, looks like decent stuff and would hold more discs than I currently own.

The only thing is I didn't have self-assembly products in mind, was looking for something pre-made, more furniture-like quality.

I have a CD 550 rack from BOLTZ. I think it's been replaced by the 600. You can find it here

I know most of their CD racks do not look like furniture but you can have them assemble it for you. I love the look. Just about everyone who has seen these has commented on how good they look and they work extremely well.

i own 4 salamander racks and can attest to their structure & quality. i just ordered a boltz system for cd's/dvd's as it is compact to hold large libraries & can grow. if you want great flexibility & very solid structure, also check out billy bags. if you are looking for something less expensive but looks good, you might check audio advisor as they list some hardwood racks for cd's & dvd's for reasonable prices. also check out audiogon & videogon for other suggestionss. i saw a couple of glass units that looked pretty cool & were not priced out of the world. good luck looking!

And now, as the saying goes, for something completely different. I gave up on jewel cases long ago and am storing a couple of thousand CD's in ring binder albums that are available through the Herrington catalog. I get forty CD's to each album by setting the CD's side by side with the liner notes. You could double up and get 80. The albums are quite attractive and fit perfectly on the shelves I use for LP storage. A little data base backup makes finding anything you want pretty simple - nothing like the convenience of a hard drive based music system, but it suits me and it might be worth your consideration.
