MJS, I found these guys about a years ago myself. I have enjoyed them ever since. I do need to spend a little more time with them in the future.... Cheers
Which of their albums do you have? Anything different than those I mentioned?
Their music sounds incredible thru decent equipment.
Melodic, psychodelic, hard rock with great production. What's not to like? Thus far I only have "Deadwing" but I'll be getting more.
MJS,thanks for the recommendations.I've ordered "deadwing" and "in absenia".Both excellent cds !!
Great! Glad you guys like them. PT has also just released a concert DVD called "Arriving Somewhere (...but not here)."
It was filmed in Chicago last year. The film captures the feel of the concert and the audio is very clean. The first few songs are hard rock but then it mellows out a bit.
It's a treat to see these guys "in concert".
I tried to post a description of each disk by Porcupine Tree, but I received a message stating "This post is no longer valid." What gives? I'm quite annoyed.
Anyway, Porcupine Tree is one of the best bands to have come along in the last ten years or so. If anyone wants to get a general idea of what each of their recordings offer I would suggest checking out either allmusic.com or progarchives.com. Also, the band's website has samples of their music.
Though some label this band as progressive rock, strictly speaking, they're really a band with many influences--prog, metal, pop, alternative. And they have an incredible ability of weaving those influences into a sonic tapestry all their own.
I think there's a forum cookie setting that is set waaay too short that only lasts a few minutes from when you first click the 'Reply' button. I am constantly getting that message when composing longish posts. I find I must always copy what I've written in the box and paste it into a fresh window created by a new click on the 'Reply' button. Next to the 'Why do so many buy into the "cons" in high end Audio' thread and DUP's posts, it's the most tedious feature of the forum.
I'm sorry about this inconvenience. The time allowed for creating a post is currently set at 6 Hours, which, if working properly, should be more than enough time.
Obviously, it's not working properly. We've taken a look at it, and haven't figured it out yet. Can you tell me how much time passes before you're logged out?
I don't actually get logged out (I think my sign in is automatic via some setting from ages ago), but, after clicking 'Reply', I'm guessing 5-10 minutes of being on the composing page for a post makes the invalid message come up. I haven't timed my post making, but, I know if I've begun a post and am searching for links, composing takes a bit longer than just dashing off a quick message. I don't have time to test the timing right now -- off to see some live music.
Hey MJS
I just placed an order of accessories, cds and lps and wanted
you to know i came across a new(not sure about that)lp from
porcupine Tree.I quess it is one of those one-song-lps , you
know,40 plus minutes song (lol) and i said to myself, what the hell and ordered it.It is called "Moonloop".
Cool! Let us know how you like the LP!
Okay,i will !
MJS,after listening to both "deawing" and "in absencia" i wanted to let you know how good both cds are, but,"in absencia" is in a different leaque !!! Great music MJS.
Porcupine Tree's next release will be titled, Fear Of A Blank Planet, and it will hit store shelves in mid April. I'm looking forward to this one big time.
During their last tour, Porcupine Tree performed two sets--the first of which featured brand new material yet to be recorded for their new CD. Judging from fan response, the new songs are killer.
Hi
Just got the In Absencia Cd and it is a great recording.
Have any of you guys heard much of either Pendragon or Magenta, Magenta inparticular seem to be very impressive
Steve
Thanks for the news on the new release DPM. It's been a long time since I've really looked forward to a bands "next album" being released. I like the direction their last few albums have taken. I know I said this earlier in this thread, but their concert DVD "Arriving Somewhere" is a VERY good source to check this band out.
Steve - I don't know anything about Pendragon or Magenta but I'm always checking out new music. I'll let you know what I find out.
Hi MJS
I like "Porcupine Tree" but "Arriving somewhere" is only for
die hard fans.In a few words, good but not that good. Here are a few others you probably have but if you don't,you should get."Warszawa" is a great live album, "lightbulb sun"
is very good and also,i promised you i'd comment on "moonloop" lp.What can i say MJS?Excellent album both in terms of sonics and music. The rest of the band is too hard-rock/metal for my taste.
Yiangos -
Thanks, I agree about Lightbulb Sun - very good. I'll check out Moonloop, too. Yes, some of their stuff is hard-rock/metal and not to my taste either. I'd say I really like about 60% of PT's songs. That's a much higher percentage than most bands I hear.
Lightbulb Sun is going to be getting a surround mix from Steven Wilson later this year. And just like Stupid Dream, it will be released as a DVD Audio/CD combo.
