I agree about the quality of that first album of his.
It was worth repeat listening and "getting to know."
I've been trying with the new one, but it just isn't grabbing me.
Maybe a little to low on focus, or too much sonic similarity from tune to tune. Whatever it is, it isn't even capturing my wife's attention, and she loves all thing "Floyd."
I'd be interested on your take of his newest effort.

That's an interesting thought. I have played around with absolute polarity before. There are difference but not as large as what is wrong with this recording, I believe. But my DAC does allow me do this so I'll give it a go. Thank for the idea.

Just gave it a try and if anything it was slightly worse the other way. I was really hoping that you had something there. I'm not sure if my speakers are the best for hearing things like absolute polarity because they are Martin-Logan CLS which are, of course dipole speakers which might mask part of the absolute polarity effect. What with in phase and out of phase sound colliding, although I have used diffusion to minimize the back wave. Don't even get me started on trying to integrate a sub with these damn things and get the phase right. Maybe Buddha, or anyone else out there who owns this album would be kind enough to test Jeff's absolute phase theory as well.

I've also tried it with Daniel Lanois' discs, including the ones he's produced.

I agree with you about David Gilmour's "david gilmour" album
I'd go as far as to say together with Roger water's "Amused to death" is the best non Floyd Albums since the band broke up. Now,regarding "on an island",compared with the above,i'd say it's a so-and-so album,both sonic wise and music wise.Regarding the "absolute phase" issues,i can do that from my pre-amplifier and i couldn't hear and improvemement.Mind you though,i did not import my copy as i usually do.I bought it localy and it's a "Made in Greece" copy.I can't be sure if it's the copy fault or no.I have more than one copy of various cd from different countries/pressings and each one sounds different.Perhaps this is the case.
My favorite solo album from a member of Pink Floyd is probably Richard Wright's 1978 album "Wet Dreams." It reminds me very much of Pink Floyd's "Wish You Were Here." It is, in my opinion the most Pink Floyd sounding album from the pack of solo albums that I have heard. I believe that Richard Wright contributed to the sound more than is generally acknowledged. It is out of print on CD, I like the album so much that I got my Project 1.2 turntable so I could listen to my white label promo copy.
Has anyone compared the newly remastered David Gilmour solo titles to the original CD's? Did the engineers use too much compression, or are the remasters a true improvement?
