Glad you appreciated these samples, Jim. Web publishing is great for things like this. FYI, I used the Fraunhofer MP3 encoder running with a variable bit rate, with a maximum of 256kbps.
My favorite is the spaced omnis (sample 5), but oh, do they pick up distant traffic noise!

Jim, I want you to know that I'm on to you guys. You, Dudley, JA and Stephen have hatched a vile conspiracy to get me to: embrace compressed formats, buy faster web access, and upgrade my computer sound system. Well, I want you to know it won't work. At least not for now.
After waiting a full eight minutes for the samples to download, I preferred the last one and would rate the first sample second. All the time, however, I felt the system I was playing the music through had more impact on my ratings than what I was putting through it. Since I'm not a devotee or organ music, I'm hoping that further such adventures stay in that genre so I'm not tempted to "upgrade" in order to better appreciate what is offered.
I hate to disappoint you, Clay, but...
You see, John, when nice folks like you get to use the best equipment you get the joy of dealing with air conditioner noise on the roof of the building ACROSS THE STREET!!!!! I think this is what you had to deal with on your first Cantus recording? The rest of us have to deal with less than the recording equivilent of the "Hubble Telescope", but that is why people BUY your and John Marks recordings.
I am sure looking hard at the Shure VP88, an M/S microphone on sales at Sweetwater Sound for a mere $699. That and the Grace Lunatec would be sweet recording portablility!!!!
Clay, what really hurts is that an MP3's on JA, AD, MF, JMR, WP, ST, or JI's system would sound better than any red book or SACD on MY system. There is hope for US only because we care and feel the pain, most of America thinks MP3 is just SWELL! I am looking forward to the new Silverman recording.
You have an excellent system and I can see why you would resist listening to MP3's as there is so much music and so little time. You are on the right track.
