I'm kind of hoping that as they get his estate in order that they find a little basement studio where he's made a dozen or so fantastic discs' worth of music - sort of a noncommercial legacy - and we get treated to a treasure trove of cool tunes.

Maybe a little something that when he heard DSOM, he thought, "Well, I can do better than that!"

Oh, well.

Buddha, an undiscovered trove of Syd material would be very cool.

Here's a nice appreciation from Carl Wilson at Zoilus.com:

RIP (Roger) Syd Barrett. While most of the obituaries will tell and re-tell the story of one of the rock era's most notorious (and dispiriting) disappearing acts and his withdrawal into decades of silence, it's worth saying how influential Barrett's post-Pink Floyd solo albums have been, especially for indie music. From the glam rockers through Robyn Hitchcock to Destroyer to Neutral Milk Hotel to the Flaming Lips to Toronto's own Alex Lukashevsky, you can hear the influence of Barrett and The Madcap Laughs all over the art rock tradition straight into the '00s - in its looseness, its unexpected juxtapositions, its combines of horror and whimsy, its switches between the plainspoken and the surreal. It's one of those cases where the music may include the symptoms of psychic distress, but is made by someone so gifted that it is compelling much beyond the voyeuristic element - where the old lines about the blurry border between genius and madness come back to life. We'll probably never know how the last half of his life seemed to him, whether it was on balance contented. But we can wish that he had a good twilight, and that night fell gently.

The death of Syd struck a chord with me and my mid-month podcast at The Best Radio You Have Never Heard (http://www.bestradiopodcast.com) is a tribute to the great rock visionary.
"Here To Do My Parts" is a tribute to Syd Barrett. Even though of course there is some Pink Floyd music in the show, it is more of a tribute to Syd

This is something that I wrote the day that it was announced.

Today the death of one of the most important musicians of the 20th century was announced. You may never have heard of him, Syd Barrett. Mr. Barrett was a founding member of Pink Floyd and responsible for writing all of their early singles and most of their first album,

Pink floyd stuff gets old real quick...it's a movie sound effects, it's got no soul, no emotion, nutin' to grab ya emotionally...it's soundtrack electronic nonsense. AND I have all of teh stuff even SACD...it gets old real fast. Hardly most important musican....it was a novelty act that burned out long ago. Marvin Gaye, SRV,ELVIS...HendrixJanis Joplin...music that matters. Buddy guy, influend so many, finally got the recognition, albert King, Albert Collins,ELVIS,Muddy Waters, Beatles, Rolling Stones, Zeppelin....musicans that matter.

Hey they lost me after "Saucer..." Without Syd they became a different group; one that I didn't/don't much care for although I'm not quite sure why a listing of other artists diminishes them.

It just shows how hype pushes the undeserving into some overblown stardom, while the REAL musicians struggle. Sound effects, spastic back and forth electronic blips and nonsense is not music as I would call it. It's sound effects for a movie. Burned out on Pink Floyd years ago. It was a novelty when it first appeared, doen't hold up. Which means it's not really that good.

I would say that the sales figures of "Dark Side of the Moon" are a great argument against your point of view. Pink Floyd are not only musicians they are artists. That is a level that most other musicians are never able to reach. The technology that they use augments their artistic vision, it is not a substitute for that vision. From

ELVIS sold over 1 BILLION records, and still makes $32 Million last year, he be dead 27 years, now THAT'S one winning entertainer! Pink floyd makes sound effects, not music. It was a novelty act in the 60's at the time it was different, it's now a borefest. Maybe syd died of boredom? No emotion, no soul, it is sound effects. that is all. consistant SOUND EFFECTS. Nothing in it grabs ya, no emotion, Moog did it first. Even on SACD at 4200W, (now 4800W) still is SOUND EFFECTS...with stuff spinning back and forth over your head.....not music. Sound Effects.

Hi-Fi can be so sad.

One speaker line, one amp brand, one type of music.

If someone ever needed an example of solipsism in audiophile land, look no further.

"solipsism"

I'm not ashamed to admit that I had to google that one. But I had a good idea of what it meant. I believe it's right on the mark. Some of us realize that our opinions ar just that, opinions and some don't.

Also just got some JSC 10ga non magic wire for the speakers, gonna try and see if I can notice a difference from 12 ga as mentioned in the article. Same clear, fleible stuff, it does say PRO SOUND on it, it must be good. Time will tell, no oxidation, the other brand holds up real well, not what I hear from people on the popular brand, that begins with Mon..... Premium price, not so premium wire. Oxidation at the connection ends will cause over time a contact problem, that I will give ya. Seen it first hand the Mon... in storage all green after some years, not so good...SK, nice and bright after years and years. Less money, better product. Ya forgot PARTSEXPRESSMCM

Why do we have to admit that DUP? Preference is, by definition, personal. You don't enjoy PF? You're entitled. However, your opinion might be shared by more of us if you actually enjoyed a second type of music occasionally. Even Robert Baird likes both country and western.

I do I do..Gospel....lotsa ENERGY, check out Elvis doing GOSPEL, incredible. And once in a while BlueGrass, not country BlueGrass, also Energy, full of life...dormant boring sound effects nope. Original "punk" the RAMONES, greatest use of 3 chords, also energy, full of energy, even when wanting to be SEDATED...

My point, DUP, is that just because you don't care for Pink Floyd, you don't need to put it down -- especially not in a forum where another member is expressing his preference for the band, and most particularly not when said Forum correspondent is eulogizing an ex-bandmember. Seems kind of tacky, on the level of crashing a funeral simply to badmouth the deceased.

Trust us, since you've said it four times, we understand that you consider PF "sound effects." You don't need to keep saying it ad nauseum. Or do I have it wrong -- if you don't get it, we're not allowed to either? Dang, do we really have to discard 400 years of Western musical tradition?

As Mark Twain said, "It is better to remain silent and be thought ignorant than to open one's mouth and remove all doubt."

DUP, you are not the only one who thinks of PF as mostly sound effects. On the other hand you have let everyone know your taste in music is kind of narrow. FWIW I've never thought much of PF and have never understood the obsession some have with DSOM. I don't like bluegrass or Gospel. Hearing either one makes me want to cut my ears off and run away!

It's kind of funny.

If you listen to Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon, it's basically blues guitar.

Take away those "sound effects" and have Junior Kimbrough kinda growl along and DUP would be playing it at 120 dB on his home PA system with 42 thousand million watts!

Maybe that's why I don't really like it. I find the blues kind of booring. But, I don't have a home PA system or enough watts to light the Chrysler building.

Well obviously you have never huffed a talbot. only interstellar overdrive is a "sound effects song" the rest are scary childhood claustrophobias...the solo albums are a million miles from soundtracks...they abound in emotions....

"Hey, ho, huff a talbot.."

Is a lyric from Octopus, but at this time of night, I can't recall which album.

So, part of DUP's concern is that Syd is dead?

I guess no Muddy Waters or John Lee Hooker for DUP. He wants his music ALIVE, literally.

At least we now know he's old enough to steal old, bad, Saturday Night Live material.
