Hi Bill

I have quite a few Quiex ii vinyl and none is translucent.
Not 100% sure about this but i believe translucent lps is something like colored vinyl. It is more of a manufacturer's option rather a quality of the material.

Quiex II was a pure vinyl formulation that was colored with dye rather than the more commonly used carbon black (which has coarse granules and creates noise). The discs are usually "black," but if you hold them up to light, you should see some light coming through the vinyl -- it's not precisely translucent, but it looks sort of glowy/brownish rather than blocking out all the light.

I worked at a record press at the time that a certain Arizona pressing facility was labeling its pressings as "Quiex II," and there were rumors that the stickers went on a lot of records that didn't use the vinyl. I have no way of knowing if that was true or if it was sour grapes on the parts of other presses.

Thanks for the info Wes

I thought Bill meant "totally see through" but to be honest,
i never hold a quinex ii up to the light to check it since i wasn't aware of this. Thanks again.

Opaqueness, or being opaque, is the physical attribute of being impenetrable by light. Transparency applies to an object which rays of light can freely transmit through its substance so that bodies situated beyond or behind, said object, can be distinctly seen. Now, I am uncertain why you claim that visible light which can be seen partially passing through an object does not qualify to be labelled as translucent, for that sounds almost like the exact definition of being translucent. Being translucent is permitting light to pass through, but diffusing it so that persons, objects, etc., on the opposite side are not clearly visible. So, your description of Quiex II sounds precisely like translucency.

I mean no disrespect, but I had to prevent any further confusion which might result from your post . . . even if I might be nearly seventeen years late.

You worked at a record press in Arizona? Interesting! By any chance, would this be Dean, a.k.a. Andrew???
