Hi Steven

I did not hear the D-100 but do own a pair of Response Four.
Steve,i am no reviewer and neither have the expertise to write a sort of review here but if there is anything specific you wish you ask, just go ahead. Personally,i love the sound of my ProAc.I would go as far as to say i wouldn't change them for another speaker even if i was given a blank, signet check. Not because they are THAT good but because they are perfect to my ears, room and needs.
If i was forced to replaced them,i'd go for the D-100.

Yiangos thank you so much for repling to my question on the D100. I have so many questions to ask. I presently own B&W Nauntilus 800 and I hate them. No bass, and extremely brite and a very forward presentation of the music. Get's on my nerves very quick. I brought them wo listening to them due to being disable and unable to travel and audition speakers. I am in the same senerio with the D100 + no one has any in Texas anyway. My room is 21'X 21' with a L shape on one end 9'X12'. Please tell me about the Proac sound, especially the Response 4, presentation. I am looking for a nonfatigue listening speaker for long periods of listening time. I listen to all types of music. Thanks again for your reply and I eagarly await your next reply. I really appreciate your help.

Hi Steven. I'm also in Texas, Austin. May I ask where you live?

We have a ProAc dealer in Austin that is a great guy. He travels back and forth between Austin and Houston on a weekly basis. His shop is called Sound Mind Audio, Brian Kurtz and I've done business with the guy. He'll treat ya right, ship gear to you for audition and even come by your house to evaluate your system at no charge.

I highly recommend Brian and would also be happy to help ya out if you are anywhere like close. BTW, I like ProAc and Brian is really crazy about them. He currently has a pair of the floor models in his main room, partnered with some Rogue tube gear that is gloriously non fatiguing and highly resolving.

Monty

Thanks for all the kind words. I did contact Sound Mind Audio a couple of weeks back and was told by a salesman named David that they would not take my B&W N800's in on a trade. This pretty much kill any kind of deal I could make with them as I want to get rid of the N800's at the same time I get my new speakers. I have been working with a stereo shop called Audio Concepts in Dallas and at this time we are extremely close on closing out a deal. I just want to be sure I don't make the same mistake with the ProAc's that I made with the B&W's(Not being able to audition them and hating them later). I sincerely want to thank you for your response and if you can tell me anything else regarding the ProAc sound to push me over the edge on the D100's please do so.
Sincerest Regards
Steve

I'm afraid I can't do much pushing. Speakers that sound good with certain gear may not sound good with other gear. ProAcs are fairly 'spensive by my standards and way into the 'try before you buy' price range for my money.

Hi Steven

I'm afraid Monty is right. The overall sound depends not only on the speakers but to the equipment you are using as well. Please, let us know which amp, source and cables you are using. Also, let me know which other parts of your system you are willing to replace so i will be able to recommend a few.
ProAcs can sound quite "different" with say, different cables. Now,something to make you feel better.I hate B&W and if you don't like them as well, you'll love the D-100. lol
Mind you,i've heard rumors the D-100 are "voiced" differently than the older "response" series.I can't be sure if that is true or false but there should be a difference in the bass quality/quantity since the Response 4 use ATC drivers wheres the D-100 drivers from another manufacturer.Anyway, this is only speculations.Let me know what you have and i'll do my best to recomment suitable components and also tell you what changes i did to make them sound to my liking, something you may want to do,too.

Hi again Steven

This is not a follow-up to my last post but rather a brief description of the sound of the response 4 since i am sure you are anxious to have something. They are very natural and dynamic with lots of bass.natural bass not that overblown bass you hear with cheap speakers. Also, they lean towards the sweet side of things though i would never call them sugary. One word of caution though. Both the response 4 and the d-100 use a pair of atc midranges which are very revealing. Some say these are the best midrange units ever made.Personally,i do not know. What i know is,with the wrong ancillaries can sound very bright and forward.
Steven,i know i cannpt transfer my experience with the proAc to you but as i said to another forum,if i was handed a blank/signet check to purchase any speaker i want (without listening to it) i'd turn down that offer.I love my proAc and don't want to replace them with anything else.
Just make sure the rest of your equipment are up to the task.

My present system consist of a Classe' CA-401 amp rated at 400 watts a side into 8 ohms, 800 watts into 4 ohms and 1600 watts into 2 ohms per Classe'. I have a Classe' CP 65 PreAmp. A Teac Esoteric DV50 CD/DVD Player and Mit Shotgun 3 Speaker Cables and Interconnects. And a PS 1000 Power Conditioner. I hope I didn't leave anything out. Please let me know if this is good equipment to use with the D100's. I appreciate your help in advance always.
Sincerely
Steve

Hi Steven
Yes,your equipment are up to the task.Do not worry about power though. They are easy load. I am not so sure about the MITs though, although i don't have any personal experience with this particular brand, from what i read, they're on the bright side tonality.Anyway,if you get d-100 and still have problem with "brightness" i believe i can tell you what to replace. It took me almost 3 years to make them sing lol
Oh,another advise.Make sure your dealer has samples of the woodwork.Their side do not do justice to the actual colors.
I was hooked with "birdseye maple" but when i saw the samples,i changed my mind.I got them in "yew" and they look great.

What speaker cables are you presently using. Interconnects also if possible.

Also what speaker cables and or Interconnects would you recommend staying away from bright cables.
Thanks
Steve

Hi Steven
Hmmmm you are trying to get me into trouble here but what the heck ! lol I have several cables, some quite expensive (pre-to-power ic $13,800.00)yet,recently,i made a discovery, some cheap cables,i am talking about $130 per meter plus $5 each additional foot and this is what i use now.I know it sounds crazy but to my ears, they are the best!
That is,unless you are one of those resolution freaks. The cables i am reffering to are the "MAC" My Audio cables. They are warm, sweet, dynamic without that in-your-face sound that most cables have.I am sure there must be other cables just as good or even better but this is all i have tried.I also have some "Element" cables but they are too analytical sounding for my taste.if you are interested i can give you the web adress as-well-as direct you to side where you can read some reviews.

Thanks.

Regarding cables, I use custom made pure silver interconnects with Neutrik Profi RCA plugs. The speaker cables are ProAc's own Response loudspeaker cable, biwired.

My system is fairly simple : A retro Quad 34 & 909 power amplifier, Naim CD5 + flatcap 2x.

I play mostly rock / pop / underground / blues ...

Honestly, D100's blow 989's away. I also have a very large living room, more kind of a loft (160m

How can anyone argue with a man with a lava lamp ?Seriously now,you think the 909 is up to the task of driving the d-100? I do not need much to understand you are a music lover instead of an audiophile but don't you think your system is unnatural regarding the value of the proAc compared to the rest of your system? This wasn't meant as a remark but rather as "worry" that the big d-100 will begin to surface the shortcomings of the rest of your equipment.

LOL

Probably, but it will sound a hell of a lot better than what I have now and it will give me plenty of room to upgrade .

Instead of spending 50% of my budget on speakers and 50% on amps I decided to spend the full 100% on speakers (always the weakest link) and start saving again for future upgrades. "The chase is better than the catch".

Anyway, the 909 has enough power (2 x 200W in 4 ohm) to drive the D100's.

I know someone who used 4 old 15W Quad tube amps on D100's until he could get hold of Audio Research valve monoblocks.

No, but one guy said it will be the last pair you will buy...I don't think so. Everyone buys more later on, everything gets better. That's what I disagree with, HE made an asumption, that is not valid,.
