Well, that is sort of funny but you appear to be serious about it. Brain chemistry acts differently on everyone. You might be the type that gets a little adrenaline or something when listening to music and it makes you drowsy. I used to have this problem before jumping out of an airplane in my early twenties. No shit, I would be scared but doze off on the plane before a jump. I wasn't the only one either. Maybe listening to music does something similar with you. Music soothes the savage beast.

It is funny but I am being totally serious about it.
I think you are right about the brain chemistry thing. Then I also had the thought that maybe as an infant music had that effect on me and now I've carried it on through adulthood.
I should also say that it's not like everytime I hear music I fall asleep. It's only when I sit down in the sweet spot for a listening session. I can get about 20 good minutes and then....zzzzzzzzz
BTW, your skydiving story was both fascinating and scary at the same time.

I very seldom watch movies but I can't remember ever falling asleep during one or TV for that matter.
Good music that is well re-produced just takes me to a peaceful place.
I did it again tonight. I sat down to listen to Elton John's "Captain Fantastic" SACD. I made it to "Someone saved my life tonight" then woke up a few songs later feeling refreshed.
Strange indeed!

It is probably fatique.I believe you subconsiously want to relax and sleep,so you put a cd on your hi-fi and start listening to music till you fall asleep. Darn,i could make a good shrink !!!

I do, i have exactly the same experience. the meditative state rings very true with me.

It's not that it always happens, but it can.

I rather enjoy it as I feel very relaxed afterwords. I still hear the music but I am basically asleep.

Funny, in college I would fall asleep (less relaxed and meditative) but still listen enough to take notes i thought were useful*

anyway i'm not sure it is fatigue but just deep relaxation and listening.

Cheers

*they weren't

I know.Was just joking LM2940.Now here's a strange thing.
Whenever i have something to do,everything is okay.If i have nothing to do,even sitting on the sofa trying to read a magazine or something, makes me fall asleep. Why not then just sit in my confy,massage-chair,listening to some quiet soothing music and fall asleep ? Of course, one could argue the use of a chair instead of a hot sexy womam but then, who'd fall asleep then ? lol

There have been times I've konked out and become worried my system was giving me listening fatigue. The thing is, my system is probably sounding the best, most natural, most relaxed it ever has, and is the least fatiguing it has ever been. I don't get that neck tightness associated with listening fatigue. Wes has suggested it may have more to do with becoming relaxed and slipping into a meditative state. I need to clean up my mess so I can have him over and see if he nods out.

As an adult male, I can vouch that any "activity" that requires me sitting still is potentially sleep inducing.

Not so much a meditative state as a temporary signing off.

I think for a lot of people, our brains are constatnly on the go, processing not only at work, but busily processing what's in store for the evening, what leftover work wasn't quite all tucked in, and what the coming day's tasks will be. Ya got parenting, spousing, finances, etc... all at a pace that's always ongoing.

Nowadays, the three martinis at lunch and the happy hour martini and the martini with dinner before a "nightcap" is frowned upon - so our brains are more heavily burdened by all this time spent not being sedated, our expectations are higher, and, what I secretly think is a major factor: nodding off is an avoidant act. We have so much on our minds that it can make us sleepy just to get momentary respite.

Heck, back in the day, the worst our dad's had to handle was two channel. Now, even Hi-Fi can pile on with multiple channels and adding video and tossing in all these formats and tweaks. Even Hi-Fi uses up more brain power than it used to.

Chalk it up to "industrial disease."

OK, I'm going back to bed.

Not only have I fallen asleep listening, I have bolted straight up at the start of another track with a little visceral impact.

I'm like really, really good in bed. I can sleep better than anybody I know.

I am retired, and frequently listen starting in mid-afternoon, and if the music is mellow and it has been a fairly busy day so far, I frequently doze off. The music relaxes me and I am semi-reclined in my Eckorns chair, and the music just relaxes me into a nap; what could be more natural? Besides, my wife usually gets me up at 6 AM, and I am due for a nap anyway...lol.

I have a buddy who always brings over a DVD he wants to watch. Ten minutes into every movie he starts sawing wood like a lumberjack. I'm beginning to think he just brings movies over so he can get some rest.

My wife orders DVDs from Netflix, and does exactly the same thing; 10 minutes into the movie, around 8 PM...out like a light with sound effects (got to put some rocks in her recliner...lol).
