Mr Cheapskate,

Oh how you have strayed. To even be thinking of spending $100, let alone $200, on a mere piece of 4-1/2" plastic claimed to have such magical powers. I'm so ashamed, not that you would believe it might work but that you couldn't find a cheaper version of a similiar product.

I have been using CD mats for quite time and I still don't know if they make all that much of a difference but the ones I use are so inexpensive that I just don't care. I have two different ones currently in use.

One is a simple green plastic mat, the same size as a CD, and it just gets placed on top of the disc before you close the CD player drawer. A local audio dealer gave me a couple several years back and I've managed to hold onto this last one.

The other is one of "Herbie's grungebuster CD mats", which is a little reuseable disc, much smaller than a CD, which goes on the center of a CD. Here's the link: Herbie's CD Mat
Note: I bought mine before the version 2 was out and the mats were somewhat cheaper.

My suggestion is: Herbie's has a 90 day money back no-risk trial, does Marigo offer the same? For that kind of money they should. I'm not trying to promote Herbie's, I'm just making a point about some of the wild claims out there in audioland. If the company can back up their claims with no-risk, at home, trials then maybe some of these wilder claims (and outrageous prices) would disappear.

Thanks for your effort to keep me on the straight and narrow, Jazzman, and thanks for the link to Herbie's stuff. Just spent several minutes with a smile on my face reading his various product descriptions. I didn't know he was out there. Still haven't parted with any cash. I keep weighing tweaks vs. more music. You know how that goes.

Hiya

Yep,got the marigo mat as well as the other mat (forgot it's name) the one you put close to a light source to get it "charged" lol and yes, they both make a difference although i ended up with a bediny clarifier.Same improvement , less risk to get a mat stuck inside your cd player. I only use it though for serious listening as i am the "permanent improvement" type of person. What i mean is,i prefer to have something that is permanently in my system, like bdr cones etc than having to "apply" whatever might be,to the cd or the player whenever i want to listen to music. Anyway,if you are willing to purchase one,the answer is yes,it makes the sound better.

Thanks, JVS, for the direct response to my post. I chuckled when, the day after I posted the question, your column provided a qualified response. I take it you've experienced no problem with the mat getting stuck in your CD player (see Yiangos comment).
