Yeah, my wife will peek over my shoulder from time to time. All I can say is Thank God there aren't very many advertisements with the price plastered all over the page!
Naturally, I point out the really modest equipment that has the price on the page to create the illusion that this stuff really isn't all that 'spensive.
Well gentlemen there is a Mrs Jazzfan and she has a few hobbies of her own. One is film (not ditigal) photography and the other is travel. So I will sit there reading my hi-end audio mags while she reads her travel mags and we both we had more money to spend on our respective hobbies. (Actually with one daughter in college and the other about to enter college, it's amazing we can even afford the magazines )
When Mrs Jazzfan complains about the cost of my audio equipment, my usual avenue of retort is that at least with my hobby, as opposed to her hobby, after I've spent the money I still have the equipment, where as she just has some fading memories of her travels. Of course, I don't win the arguement. And the cables are still pretty damn ugly.
I don't think you'd sell much gear if the ads showed real world scenarios re: cables (see attachment.)
Mrs. Buddha says, "As long as I'm on a roll..."
She was also astute enough to notice another thing I didn't.
(First a disclaimer: I love Stereophile the most, but I'm not entirely monogamous regarding the my reading habits.)
Mrs. Buddha pointed out that the ads in Stereophile tend more toward what she called "gynecology shots," close ups of one piece of gear, with most equipment being pictured without a "context."
Then she pointed out the differences between Stereophile and "a prominent two-channel-oriented-east-coast competitor" and their ads had many pictures of equipment in rooms and they actually showed people in the room apparently enjoying the product.
Well, as a subjectivist audiophile, I admit to being easily influenced, but she seemed right. Has anyone else noticed what she noticed about ad pics?
Buddha,
Funny, but I noticed a similar phenomenon occurring in the photos between "High Times" magazine and "Cannabis User" magazine. HT tends to show closeups of the buds where as CU will people actually enjoying the substance. So it would appear that this is not just limited to audio gear.
However, on the other hand, "Police Gazette" shows many photos of what happens when people get caught using that substance .
Funny stuff Jazzfan
