I still have a pair of Altec 205 in the closet, they are about 12 years old now, I believe. There was no doubt their foam surrounds needed replaceing. They looked as if they had just rotted out, or as if a rat had been gnawing on them. If they are close to falling apart you can run your finger around the surrounds with slight pressure and they will likely crumble in the worst areas. If you find they are in need of replacing there are many internet sites that would have you believe you can do it yourself, but for a few dollars more you can have them professionally done and I strongly advise going this route.

Thank you for the response. I will try the slight pressure method to see if there is any sloughing. I had intended to go the professional route for replacing the surrounds. DIY is OK if you have done a bunch of it for a given procedure, but if you are doing it once for the first time I can see where the problems can occur.

I agree with the friability test.

However, if they sound as good as the day you bought them, then go by the old saying - If it ain't broke, don't fix it!

They are great old speakers, my bro-in-law is still grooving on his...and they sound as good as ever!

Cheers!
