Yeah, it's pretty cool hearing Diana Krall's lips seperate before she utters a word. I've got the same disease you have. There is no cure, i'm convinced.

Induction Dynamics ID1 loudspeakers do it for me. http://www.inductiondynamics.com/products/id1.html?id=id1
(You don't need the optional subwoofer amp unless you want it for movies, etc.)

My reference, 2-channel system consists of the ID1 speakers mated with Simaudio Moon's Evolution Series components (Andromeda CD player; P-8 preamplifier; W-8 power amplifier). Induction Dynamics is based in Overland Park, Kansas, and it's unfortunate that their ID1 speakers have largely gone unnoticed by the high-end audio press, because they are simply magnificent instruments.

I've auditioned a variety of speakers from Thiel, Meadowlark, ProAc, Von Schweikert Audio, B&W, Revel, etc. Among all of these mid-sized, floorstanding speakers, none have been able to hold a candle to the ID1's, in my humble opinion. The ID1's are truly full-range speakers, producing bass into the low 20's as a (switchable) four-way speaker. In addition (and unlike the Thiels) they are not only efficient, they're also free from the large room-boundary requirements so typical of 1st-order crossovers.

(By the way, I thank Bob Kirk of Archive Audio in Bexley, OH. for introducing me to the Induction Dynamics ID1 speakers.)

Try Triangle Luna or Naia from Stratos series.

Phoneman!

I find that to be a highly interesting speaker!

This will be my year to get a pair into the house.

Excuse my ignorance, but regarding the Mackies, how would you hook up to a home stereo a pair of amplified monitors made to run off a mixing console?

Thanks

I suspect they would hook-up the same way you would an active subwoofer, which is to say with your normal speaker outputs as at least one option.

If you are looking for speakers with high resolution - look for speakers with high sensitivity. In our experience drivers with high sensitivity (100dB+) can produce way more details and micro-elements of the musical and vocal programs compare to drivers with low sensitivity.
High sensitivity is the best way to "pull out" the smallest, hidden details (from records) that produce musicality.

High resolution in speakers has nothing to do with high sensitivity; that is pure unmitigated nonsense.

My speakers (the Vandersteen Treos) have EXTREMELY high resolution, as John Atkinson documented in his article where he reviewed them a year or so ago.

The fact that they have relatively low sensitivity simply means that they require more amplifier power to drive them.

To give really specific suggestions, it would be helpful to know your budget.

Of the brands I've heard I would say Monitor Audio, Vandersteen, Joseph Audio, some KEFs all tend to be more resolving. I auditioned Tannoy's side by side PSB and felt the Tannoy was a bit more resolving between the two.

I heard some ATC's last week - relatively more resolving than the Spendors next to them.

Magneplanar speakers are probably the highest-resolution speakers you can buy.

They have low-frequency limitations, require a lot of amplifier power, and are large and have room placement limitations, but will give you incredible sound if you have the room and the amplifier required.
