Do I need to buy an Equalizer or not ?

That's the real question. What do you intend to use it for? If you need to use it to compensate for poor acoustics or speaker problems, those issues are better attacked with better choices, acoustic treatment and, if necessary, parametric EQ.

If you use it as a 'tone control,' that OK but not generally needed.

Kal,

Thanks for your advise.

I wonder if I can get the parametric equalization (lets say 9-12 bands per channel) from a built in A/V receiver function (any good one like Denon 2805) or whether I can only have it from an external unit (conventional equalizer).

My personal preference is in favor of equalizing the frequencies (more highs ) sometimes , to suit the mood.

Thanks in adv.

Yes. For example, on the Denon AVR-4806 I have now, there is a manual EQ option which is simply a parametric EQ for each channel. OTOH, it defeats the other, more effective EQ options and is, because it is channel-by-channel, not very handy for casual use.

If, as it seems, all you want is a simple tone control, the Denon has that as well and it is switchable.
