The best "ready bought" shelving solution is the Ikea Expedit. It is available in a 4x4 or a 5x5 configuration. You will want the larger of the two. These are not sold by mail (they are large and heavy, even disassembled, so you need to take a truck or van to an Ikea and pick them up. They run about $100 - $150 I think. I have some plans where you can build a modular system as well, but it takes a lot of lumber and time. I started that years ago and have pretty much filled a room at this point.

Cool, it sounds like the IKEA stuff is still a good idea. The only problem with IKEA is the locations (or lack of actually.) I'm pretty sure most of their locations are 1000 miles or more from the Colorado area. They need to open a store in the Denver area. Any other ideas?

Thanks a ton, Bill. My ex-father in-law made a huge bookcase, but sized for LPs, a few years ago. But it was sold before a move in 2003. It was monsterous and made with 2x8s and 2x4s. Had 5 shelves plus the open top and was about 4 feet wide. Weighted a freakin' ton! Was sorry to let it go, but needed the room.

Hello Bill,

I just joined the forum and saw your post. I am definitely interested in some sort of instructions on how to make a shelving unit. Unfortunately, there are no IKEA stores around here (Kansas City), so I think building my own unit is the only option. Thanks very much and merry Christmas!
